About this event

Didn't we try this once before? Yes, we did, but due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to postpone our original plan. But, due to popular demand, it's back.

Yes, it's road trip season, and what better time to head to the mountains of Northwest Colorado than September. Our destination is Rangely, roughly 75 miles North of Grand Junction, along the White River in the Piceance Basin. There, we'll meet up with member of the Rainbow Classics of Utah region.

You're probably asking what's in Rangely? Well, in addition to Colorado Northwestern Community College, Rangely is home to Colorado's newest car museum, the Rangely Auto Museum, featuring the collection of Bud Striegel. The museum contains a mix of antique, classic and special interest cars from the 1910's through the 1950's.

SACK members and guests will gather at the Forney Museum at 7:00 a.m.. on Saturday, September 13. Christof has promised coffee and donuts to get your drive started on the right foot.

From there, we will travel west on I-70 to Rifle, then North on CO-13 to Meeker for a lunch stop. From Meeker, we will make the scenic drive through the White River valley to Rangely, and then to the car museum. Overall, it's about a 280 mile (one way) trip. Make sure your car is up to the rigors of I-70 including the Eisenhower Tunnel (elevation 11,158 ft. and the highest point on the Interstate Highway system, just in case you're keeping track) and Vail Pass (elevation 10,666 ft.).

Once in Rangely, we'll head to the car museum. By mid-September, the museum will have closed for the season, but we've made exclusive arrangements for access. A group dinner has been arranged at Gio's Family Restaurant. In between, you'll have plenty of time to check into the accommodation of your choice and explore the town.

After dinner, there will be ample time to take advantage of our host hotel's hot tub, or just hang out on the patio and enjoy the views. Or, for those that just have to get back to civilization, there is always the option of heading back home after dinner. Sunday morning, we've planned a group breakfast before we say our goodbyes and head for home. Your registration packet will include several suggested scenic route options for your trip home, to complete this road trip weekend.

So, what do you need to do to join us? Two things. First, make your overnight reservation (see information below). Second, click the Register Now button below to sign up. There is no cost to register, but we need to know names and head counts to coordinate with the restaurants and museum.

Overnight Accommodations in Rangely

Our host hotel is the Moosehead Lodge. You may make reservations either online at the Moosehead Lodge Website or by phone at (970) 675-2433. Online booking is strongly suggested, as this venue offers several types of accommodations include hotel style rooms and individual cabins. By booking on site, you can see and choose the category of room that suits your needs.

Camping more your style? Or maybe you're interested in bringing along a vintage (?) RV. The city owned Rangely Camper Park is immediately adjacent to the Moosehead Lodge. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations.
