About this event

Washington County Museum of Fine Arts (WCMFA) is an art museum located in Hagerstown, Maryland, United States. The building is located off Park Circle and serves as a centerpiece in Hagerstown City Park. The museum was donated in 1929, by Mr. and Mrs. William Singer, Jr. It was completed in 1931, and two wings were added in 1949. The museum provides residents and visitors with access to a nationally recognized permanent collection and a rotating schedule of exhibitions, musical concerts, lectures, films, art classes and special events for children and adults throughout the year. The collections include 19th & early 20th Century American Art, Old Masters, and Decorative art.

Washington County Museum of Fine Arts has no entrance fee, and relies on public and private donations.

Featured Exhibit: The Scandinavian Home: Art & Identity

Discover the romance of the North through this vibrant and fascinating selection of paintings, furniture, textiles, metalwork and ceramics. Scandinavian artists, like many artists in the late nineteenth century, began to reject the formulaic teaching of state-sponsored academies and joined an international trend toward valuing individual expression and local subject matter. Landscapes featured luminous northern skies and snow-blanketed hills; trolls, fairies, and dragons adorned silver, furniture, tapestries, and more. The homes of artists, craftspeople, art patrons, and middle-class collectors showcased the work of local and regional artists celebrating Nordic subjects, techniques, and folkways.

Drawn from the remarkable collection of Pennsylvania-based collectors David and Susan Werner, The Scandinavian Home explores how Nordic artists of the 19th and early 20th played a crucial role in reinforcing a sense of belonging in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, as each country strove to distinguish and celebrate specific local and national identities. ‘Home’ represented one’s domestic residence, the physical land itself, and the communities built through a collective commitment to social democracy. The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts is the second venue on the national tour of this stellar private collection.

The Hager House is a two-story stone house in Hagerstown, Maryland that dates to c. 1740. The house was built by Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant from Westphalia, who founded Hagerstown. The basement contains two spring-fed pools of water, providing a secure water source. Hager sold the property, then known as Hager's Fancy to Jacob Rohrer. The house remained in the Rohrer family until 1944, when it was acquired by the Washington County Historical Society. The restored house was given to the City of Hagerstown in 1954 and opened to the public in 1962 as a historic house museum.
